Auction: 326 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 1239
King, Martin Luther. (January 15, 1929-April 4, 1968). American Baptist minister and activist; a leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement who saw equality for blacks as a fundamental right. His nonviolent protests earned him the respect of people of all races, and his untimely death at the hands of an assassin had a profound and lasting impact on most Americans. While King signed many items, the demand for his signature continues to grow, and far exceeds the supply. 4to Magazine Cover Signed. In the lower right corner of the detached cover of Time Magazine, Volume 85, No.12, March 19, 1965, King signs in brown ink "Best Wishes / Martin, Luther King, Jr." The cover, which bears a portrait of King (by artist Ben Shahn) giving an impassioned speech, has some minor wear at the folds, and a scuff in the upper margin. There are light remnants of a remove address label, but the overall condition is in very good condition. Also included is an image of King, suitable for framing. A similar signed cover, but not quite as nice, brought $6,875 in a Heritage Oct 17, 2013 auction. Ex. Lot 172 from R. M. Smythe's May 14, 2004 sale. From the Collection of John Herzog.
