Johnston, Joseph E. (February 3, 1807-March 21, 1891). Career U.S. Army officer who served with distinction in the Mexican-American War and Seminole Wars, Johnston was one of the most senior general officers in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. ALS. 8vo. 2pp. Richmond, Virginia. As president of the National Express and Transportation Company. February 5, 1866. To Major General Wilson. "Confidentail." "I have been endeavoring with members of the Company, to procure information in relation to the precise condition of the Bankers & Brokers Express Company & the intentions of those at its head...I don't see how we can make any fair arrangement with Adams, or indeed, a satisfactory one. A division of the territory would undoubtably confine us to the South, as the least profitable district..." Johnston was the senior Confederate commander at the First Battle of Bull Run in 1861. He was responsible for the defense of Richmond during the 1862 Peninsula Campaign. He received a severe wound at the Battle of Seven Pines, after which he was replaced in command by Robert E. Lee. In 1863, Johnston commanded the Department of the West, and was criticized for his actions and failures in the Vicksburg Campaign. In 1864, he fought against Sherman in the Atlanta Campaign. Near the end of the War he commanded the small remaining forces in the Carolinas Campaign and eventually surrendered his armies to Sherman. After the war, Johnston was an executive in the railroad and insurance businesses. He was commissioner of railroads under Grover Cleveland. Overall very good consition, with a few minor edge splits. From the Collection of John Herzog.
