Minnesota Gold Mining Company (Minnesota) 1866. St. Paul. 10 shares. Issued, not cancelled. No.147. Miners work near sluice boxes. Prospector and dog, left. Revenue stamp affixed. Hatch & Co. EF. In 1865, State Geologist Henry Eames confirmed the presence of gold & silver-bearing quartz in the rocks of the Lake Vermilion area in northeastern Minnesota. Fifteen mining companies formed, but little gold was discovered. Prospectors soon abandoned the area and moved westward.
