Woodrow Wilson; William Jennings Bryan; Panama Canal Commission. Wilson -- Twenty-Eighth President of the United States (1913-1921), sponsor of the League of Nations, Winner of 1919 Nobel Peace Prize; Bryan - Secretary of State under Wilson, resigned in 1915 because of his pacifist position on World War I, enemy of banks and the gold standard, proponent of "Free Silver". Document Signed "Woodrow Wilson" as President and "W.J. Bryan" as Secretary of State, both in brown ink. In this official document, Washington, D.C. August 19, 1914, Wilson appoints Nicholas Cornet of Indiana as a commissioner in the joint Panama Canal Commission. Large embossed Presidential seal to left of Wilson's and above Bryan's signature. Some stains in right margin of document which has been rolled, About Fine; accompanying the document is a presentation gavel to Cornet inscribed on a gold plaque: "TO JUDGE NICHOLAS CORNET From his Colleague Samuel Lewis Joint Land Commission Panama 1915"; also a cabinet b&w photo of a bespectacled Cornet. The French-born, Nicholas Cornet of Lawrenceburg, Indiana (1852-1918) succeeded David Marks on the Commission; and on his death in 1918 was succeeded by Judge Burt New of Indiana. The photo with tear in the gray cardboard matting, the gavel well-preserved. An interesting Panama Canal trio. [3]
