Gould, Jay "Scheme" Letter. (New York) October 26, 1878. 578 Fifth Avenue, New York. 8vo. ALS. "Dear Mr. Sage, I saw Gov Morgan & he has agreed to meet me with Doct. Green at 12 o'clock to arrange the 15,000 shares. He says Dock Green has his circular ready embracing the scheme which looks very attractive." Signed "Jay Gould." A post script mentions "U.P. Earnings." Jay Gould was a major American railroad developer and speculator who sometimes collaborated with Russel Sage, who was a Director of the Union Pacific Railroad. Together, they were Trustees for several railroads controlled by the Union Pacific. "Gov Morgan" was most likely E. D. Morgan, a leading stock broker, and former Governor of New York from 1859 to 1865. Folded and torn in several places, and repaired with Scotch tape, but completely legible. The Jay Gould signature is not damaged in any way, and is bold and sharp. A fascinating private communication between two famous "robber barrons."
