1878 Goloid Metric Dollar, Judd-1563, Pollock-1754, Low R.6, PCGS PR63. Liberty faces left, wearing a cap adorned with wheat ears, cotton leaves and bolls. LIBERTY is inscribed in incuse letters on her headband. 13 stars ringing the rim. E PLURIBUS UNUM arches across the top. On the reverse, GOLOID / METRIC / 1--G. / 16.1--S. / 1.9--C. / GRAMS 14.25. appears within a circle of 38 stars. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above, 100 CENTS below. Struck in goloid with a reeded edge. This is the only reverse die used in 1878 that included METRIC as part of the inscription. Goloid experiments continued into 1880, then ceased, perhaps because the opponents of goloid convinced some of the supporters that the metal could be easily confused with silver. This very attractive example exhibits light lavender toning accentuating the central devices on the obverse. Ex. Heritage January 2009, Lot 1894.
