Auction: 324 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 795
1856 Half Cent, Judd-177, Pollock-205, R.5, PF64 NGC. Like the regular half cent dies of 1856 but composed of an experimental metal. Eventually the experiment lead to the successful introduction of the copper-nickel small cents. The planchets for these pieces are copper-nickel, either 88% copper or 90% copper. Struck with a plain edge. Bright orange-red highly reflective surfaces are seen on both sides of this attractive example. The strike is bold except for a few trivial weak spots. Deeply mirrored, with lots of eye appeal. From the Lemus Collection. Ex. Heritage January 2009 Lot 1548 where it realized $4,600.
