U.S. Civil War. G.A.R. Edwin E. Day Post, Greenfield, Massachusetts Memorial Flag for Lafayette Cook, 1915. 48-star flag inscribed on three of its white stripes: IN MEMORY OF COMRADE LAFAYETTE COOK EDWIN E. DAY, POST 174 G.A.R. Born in Pompey, NY in 1829, Lafayette Cook served in the US Navy during the Mexican War, then was for 10 years after a merchantman. From 1852-1855 he was in California. On August 26, 1862, in Windham, Vermont, he enlisted in Company D, 16th Vermont Regiment. He was mustered out a year later. Leaving Vermont, he settled in Greenfield, MA. There he was a member of the Edwin E. Day GAR Post. Cook died Oct. 29, 1915. Some tiny moth holes and small rents, otherwise Very Fine. Ex Hammatt Collection.
