66th Regiment of Foot (2nd Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment) Officer's Shako. Regency period, ca. 1820. Bell-top shako of black felt and patent leather top and peak. Front plate composed of a large crown over Maltese Cross with the motto PRO ARIS ET FOCIS around the regimental emblem of a stag under an oak tree, leather cockade with a field badge at the center above, missing top plume. Gilt lion head bosses suspend gilt, velvet-lined chin straps; braided gold bullion cord with flounders hangs from hooks either side. Maker's name label inside: HAWKES, MOSLEY & Co., 22 Piccadilly. Very well-preserved for a hat of this age, very minor split at rim edge on leather top. Ex Hammatt Collection.
