Southern & Atlantic Telegraph was Jay Gould's Atlantic and Pacific Telegraphs's southern ally. Western Union reached an accord with this company, leaving Gould without the necessary southern connections to overcome Western Union's dominant position in the industry, forcing Gould to negotiate with Western Union.
