"Private armed brig GRAND TURK." (Massachusetts) Dec. 24, 1814. Salem. One "Seaman's Share of the net proceeds which may come into the hands, of all prizes that may be captured by the said Brig during her fifth cruise." Printed form. Some minor age toning, and some minor edge splits and fold junction splits noted, otherwise Very Fine.
The GRAND TURK was an 18-gun brig purchased by a group of Salem and Boston men and commissioned by President Madison to cruise against the enemies of the United States. These privateers were necessary because of the small size of the U.S. Navy during the War of 1812. Although the Treaty of Ghent ending the War was signed on the same day this certificate was issued, the ship still had time to earn money for the investor, as the Treaty was not ratified by the U. S. Senate until February 15, 1815.This is the only War of 1812 privateer's share certificate we have seen. A truly rare and historically important example, and not likely to be seen again for decades.
From the John E. Herzog Collection.
