George I. King of Great Britain [1715-1727] and Elector of Hannover. The first of the Hanoverian kings, established by the Act of Settlement, ascending upon the death of Queen Anne. Speaking very little English, George gave most of his attention to his German holdings, permitting the development of a strong Parliament under Robert Walpole, whose executive authority made him in effect the first Prime Minister. Choice Manuscript Letter Signed "Georg Friedrich / Elector" as Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg and Prince Elector of Hannover, in German, 1 1/2 pages, folio, Weyhausen, [Germany], March 9, 1710. He writes to Ernst Ludwig, the Count of Hesse-Darmstadt, in Hamburg, concerning "…the fact that on the 19th day of the coming month of June, the election of a new Burggrave at Friedberg is to take place. Since my Privy Councillor, Colonel von Dieden, is one of the candidates for this office, and since I would very much like to see him attain this position, I herewith request Your Highness and kind Cousin to urge those people who are in your service, as well as the Castellans in your district, to give von Dieden their vote. He would then have reasons to hope for a majority...I would be much obliged to Your Highness for any consideration you could give to this matter..." Integral address panel with the long list of Ernst Ludwig's titles. Bears original red wax seal. Age-toned, with light foxing, and a blank portion of address panel excised, otherwise in very good condition. As Friedberg is within Hesse-Darmstadt, Ernst Ludwig was well placed to help secure the election. Apparently, he did not, for Johann Erwin, Baron of Greifenklau zu Vollraths was elected to the burggraviate. With translation.
