Eliot, George (Mary Ann Evans Lewes, 1819-1880). English novelist, journalist, and translator. One of the most important writers of the Victorian era. ALS, two pages, 8vo. Lightly mounted in a mat. 16 Blandford Square. "Friday." No date, but a pencil notation on the mat says "[6? June 1862]. "Dear Mr. Leighton, Thanks for the … vignettes. They are satisfactory. Your delicious drawing was with me all day yesterday, and made the opera more delightful to me in the evening. I never saw anything comparable…I know your time is very precious to you just now, but I think we shall both benefit by a little talk together after you have read the second proof. Yours very truly, M. E. Lewes" George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans Lewes. Despite the fact that female authors were published under their own names during her lifetime, Eliot felt she would not be taken seriously unless her stories appeared to have been written by a man.

From the collection of Diana Herzog.
