Eliot, George (Mary Ann Evans Lewes, 1819-1880). English novelist, journalist, and translator. One of the most important writers of the Victorian era. ALS, two pages, 8vo. The Heights. Witley, Godalming. June 29, no year, but George Eliot and Henry Lewes bought The Heights in late 1876. The original address, The Priory, North Bank, Regents Park is crossed out, as well as the second paragraph. "Dear Mr. Langford, I am quite willing that the extract should be made from 'Silas Marner' for the Sixth National Reading Book. Will you oblige me by sending a copy of 'Middlemarch' with a copy of Smith & Elder's 'Rimola' to Madame Mario….Thanks for your friendly wishes which greeted us on our arrival at this country home. We enjoy our quiet blessings …want nothing but health. I was glad to hear from Mr. Blackwood that you are now in Excellent condition. Always yours sincerely, M. E. Lewes." George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. Despite the fact that female authors were published under their own names during her lifetime, Eliot felt she would not be taken seriously unless her stories appeared to have been written by a man. There is a stain on the first page, but the second page which has the signature is pristine.
