Charles II. Stuart King of England, Scotland, and Ireland (1660-1685). LS, 15" x 12" folded into two panels. July 27, 1666. Signed "Charles R" at the top. Also signed by Sir William Morice, Secretary of State from 1660 to 1668. Concerns the appointment of Robert Earle of Lindsay to Lieutenant of the County Lincolne. Charles I, the father of Charles II, was executed at Whitehall at the end of the English Civil War. Oliver Cromwell defeated Charles II at the Battle of Worcester in 1651, and Charles was forced to flee to the Continent. In 1658, after the death of Cromwell, Charles was invited to return to Great Britain and to assume the throne. Charles was known as "the Merry Monarch" because, for the most part, his reign was viewed by many as return to normalcy as compared to the rule of Cromwell and the Puritans. "Our will and pleasure is that you prepare a Bill for Our Royal signature…containing a Commission unto Our Right Trusty…Cousin Robert Earle of Lindsay Lord Great Chamberlain of England, to be Our Lieutenant of Our County of Lincolne….Given at Our Court at Whitehall." The lower portion of the blank second page is missing, and there are some minor mounting stains, but otherwise fine. Opportunities to obtain early Royal documents such as this are few and far between.
