Thomas Walsh served during the 1916 Easter Rising with the Irish Citizen Army. Originally part of the General Post Office garrison, he was one of the small party of seven men from the I.C.A. under the command of George Norgrove despatched from the G.P.O. at 5:00pm on Easter Monday, 24th April 1916, to reinforce the City Hall garrison following the failure to take Dublin Castle. Early the following morning the City Hall garrison surrendered, were made prisoners, and taken first to Ship Street Barracks and then to Richmond Barracks. Tried by Field General Courts Martial and sentenced to death by firing squad, his sentence was subsequently commuted by the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief to ten years' penal servitude.
