Hungary. Hapsburg. Elisabeth die Heilige (1207-1231). So-called "Judenmedaille". Prague, ca. 1619. Gilt bronze. 51.5mm. 26.04 gms. Privately minted in Prague in the Gothic style to glorify the House of Hapsburg. Crowned and veiled bust of St. Elisabeth l. within tressure of 17 arcs, rev. the Church of St. Elisabeth in Marburg within similar tressure. Hoffmeister 4. Daughter of King Andreas II of Hungary, Elisabeth married Ludwig IV, Landgrave of Thüringia in 1221 at the age of 14. A follower of the ideals of St. Francis of Assisi, she was much involved in charitable work for the poor and sick. After her death in Marburg in 1231, miracles were reported near her grave (miracles were also attributed to her in her lifetime including the best-known Miracle of Roses). Canonized by Pope Gregory IX, Elisabeth was greatly venerated as a Catholic saint. About Extremely Fine.
