American Express Company, (NY), $500 shares, 1866, No. 1192, signed by James Fargo and Henry Wells as Secretary and President, blue frame, dog with key in circle, ship, train ,terminal and wharf, IC, VF+ detail, but the stamps cover a hole. Great for framing.

American Express was started in 1850 by Henry Wells, William G. Fargo and John Butterfield. Fargo was the company's president from 1868 until he died. After gold was discovered in California, Wells and Fargo expanded banking and express facilities in the West, by founding Wells Fargo & Co. They also started a stagecoach empire. Today, American Express accounts for almost a quarter of all credit card sales in this country.
