William H. Vanderbilt was Commodore Vanderbilt's eldest son. The Commodore at first had little regard for William's business abilities, but then William managed to beat his father in a business deal, convincing the Commodore to put him in charge of a railroad in Staten Island. William turned the railroad around and won his father's complete confidence.
