New Orleans & North Eastern Railroad (LA), New Orleans, $100 shares, 1871, No. 42, signed by James Longstreet as President, full violet underprint, train on trestle, woman with spindle, left, IC, VF+ detail, some very minor margin splits at the top.

James Longstreet was a Confederate general in the American Civil War and the principle subordinate to General Robert E. Lee. He was referred by General Lee as his "Old War Horse". General Longstreet was considered one of the finest corps commanders in the Army of North Virginia. He made significant contributions to his army's victories at the Second Bull Run Fredericksburg, and at Chickamauga. His most controversial service was at the Battle of Gettysburg. During this battle, he openly disobeyed General Lee, and employed his own tactics which led to the disastrous infantry assault known as Pickett's Charge. After the war, General Longstreet worked for the U.S. government as a diplomat, and as U.S. Railroad Commissioner.
