New World Exploration and Geography, Upper Mississippi Basin: Letter from B. Ettival to Joseph Nicolas Nicollet, Jan. 30, 1833. Two pages, folio, Ft. Johnson, S.C., addressed to "Mon. Nicollet, astronome, Augusta, Georgia". Letter, entirely in French, from Ettival, Civil Engineer of Charleston Harbor concerns Nicollet's natural and mineralogical study of the area upstream. Nicollet (1786-1843), French geographer, astronomer, and mathematician, is best known for his mapping of the Upper Mississippi Basin during the 1830's. He led three expeditions to the region between the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers largely in what is now Minnesota, and South and North Dakota. Nicollet's maps were the most accurate of the time, they corrected errors made by Zebulon Pike and provided the basis for all subsequent maps of the American interior. Postmarked CHARLESTON S.C. JAN 31 in red. Large, but unobtrusive rent below address, typical folds. About Very Fine. Ex the Reverend Paul Harwell Coll.
