American Brewing History; Frederick Pabst, steamboat-pilot-cum brewer, eventual owner of Pabst Brewing Co., and Charles Best; American brewer. Autograph Document Signed "Fred Pabst" and "Chas Best". Certificate for 1 share for $1,000 of the Philip Best Brewing Company issued to Frederick Pabst, 20 May 1873. Pabst and Best both sign on verso. Handsome vignettes of the Empire Brewery and the South Side Brewery. Jacob Best, Sr., a recent immigrant from Germany, founded Empire Brewery in Milwaukee in 1844 with his four sons, Jacob. Jr., Charles, Philip and Lorenz. Charles and Lorenz left in 1850 to found Plank Road Brewing (which became Miller Brewing Co.), while Jacob Jr. and Philip took over the company when their father retired. By 1859, Philip was sole owner of the Philip Best Brewing Co. German immigrant, Frederick Pabst, a steamboat pilot on Lake Michigan married Philip's daughter, Maria in 1862. After his ship ran aground in December of 1863, Pabst decided to change careers. Entering into partnership with his father-in-law and buying half of the Best Brewery, Frederick would go on to build the company into one of America's major breweries, Pabst Brewing Company. Very Fine.
