Civil War: Stahel, Julius. Union general, Medal of Honor recipient; born in Szeged, Hungary in 1827, Stahel served in the Austrian army, then joined in the fight for Hungarian independence in the 1848 Revolution, when it was put down, he fled to Prussia, then England, migrating to the U.S. in 1859; after enlisting in the Union Army, he saw his first combat at the First Battle of Bull Run, appointed brigadier general Nov. 12, 1862; distinguished himself under fire at the Battle of Piedmont June 5, 1864 leading his division while seriously wounded, awarded the Medal of Honor in 1893 for his actions; served in the diplomatic corps after the war, Consul in Yokohama, then Osaka.
