Osgood, Samuel (1747-1813). American merchant and statesman, first Postmaster General under the U.S. Constitution (1789-1791); during the Revolution, led local company of Minutemen at Battle of Lexington and Concord, aide to Gen. Artemas Ward, member Provincial Congress of Massachusetts, Massachusetts State Senator and Representative, Commissioner of the Treasury, member NY State Assembly and Speaker; appointed by Thomas Jefferson, Naval Officer of the Port of New York in 1803, a position Osgood held until his death. Autograph Document Signed "S Osgood" as Naval Officer. One page, partially printed folio Port of New York certification, April 23, 1807. The document certifies that Peter Murphy has paid duties on merchandise imported on the "Ship Eliza" coming from "Canton". Osgood signs at bottom below long handwritten listing of Murphy's items. On verso, Samuel Dodge signs as having "Inspected Apr. 24, 1807 Saml Dodge". During the Revolution, Dodge (1758-1820) served as a sergeant in the 4th New York and ensign in the 2nd New York, he was an original member of the New York State Society of Cincinnati, and was later customs inspector at the Port of New York. Light toning and soiling, usual folds and edge nicks, a few old spots of paper-backing. Very Good.
