Morgan, John Pierpont. American financier, banker, philanthropist, and art collector; held sway over the world of corporate finance and consolidations of his time, his firm J.P. Morgan & Co. was the one of the most powerful banking houses in the world; aimed to control rail transport in the eastern U.S. Autograph Document Signed "J. Pierpont Morgan" as Trustee. $1000, 4 ½ percent first mortgage Bond issued by the New Jersey Junction Railroad Company, June 30, 1886. Signed on verso by Morgan and also by Harris C. Fahnestock as Trustees. Fahnestock (1835-1914), a noted 19th century investment banker, and one of the founders of First National Bank, was a heavy investor in railroad stock. Large vignette with a depiction of Morgan's yacht, the Corsair about which, the much quoted Morgan phrase was said to have arisen" If you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it!"
