Madison, James. Fourth President of the United States (1809-1817). Statesman, political theorist, fifth U.S. Secretary of State (1801-1809); known as the "Father of the Constitution" for his work in drafting the U.S. Constitution and authoring and championing the Bill of Rights. Journalist and author, George F. Will once wrote that if we truly believed that the pen was mightier than the sword, our capital would have been named "Madison, D.C." Autograph Document Signed "James Madison" as President. Land grant registration, June 6, 1814. Vellum, printed and written, 13 ¼ x8 ¾". The document certifies the payment of Moses Gillaspy of Columbiana County, Ohio for a quarter lot of land "north west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of the Kentucky river". Madison signs bottom right, paper seal affixed to left. Ink weakening on "James" in the signature, but clear. Irregular right edge. About Fine.
