Adams, John Quincy. Sixth President of the United States (1825-1829); skillful negotiator and astute statesman, served as U.S. minister to the Netherlands, Prussia, Russia and the Court of St. James; while Secretary of State (1817-1825), Adams negotiated the Adams-Otis Treaty (acquiring Florida for the U.S.), and the Treaty of 1818 (settling boundary issues with Canada), and wrote the Monroe Doctrine - many historians consider him one of the greatest Secretaries of State in American history. Autograph Document Signed "J.Q. Adams" as President. Land grant, April 1, 1825. Vellum, printed and written, 13 5/8 x 9". The document grants Johnson Walker, "assignee of James Butler", 167 1/10 acres "of the Lands to be sold at Franklin, Missouri." The document's original printed header was "JAMES MONROE, President of the United States of America,". James Monroe's name has been lined through, and "John Quincy Adams" penned above (government waste was much frowned upon by Adams). Embossed seal affixed lower left. Light soiling in margins, Fine.
