Colorado Gold. 1860 Clark-Gruber $2.50. PCGS AU50. A rather nice $2.50 gold piece from Clark, Gruber, and Co. with pleasant orange toning. The company struck thousands of coins over a successful two year period from 1860-62, after which the owners decided to cash out and sell their business to the US government. The building and much of the equipment that they left behind would eventually be used as an assay office for the federal government from 1863 until 1906 when the entire facility was converted into what we now know as the Denver Mint.
