Germany. "Kornjude" Medal, 1694. Silver. 36.6mm. 13.41 gms. By Christian Wermuth. Man walking with staff, carrying sack on his back, atop the devil opens the sack, letting the grain pour out; DU KORN IUDE.; THEUREZEIT ("Expensive" or "Famine Time") and date in ex., rev. Grain sifter shaped like a wheel, on it is inscribed Proverb XI.26 in German: "He that witholdeth corn, the people shall curse him; but blessing shall be upon the head of him who selleth it." Brettauer 1900, Fried. P.3, Kisch. 54/18, Wohlfahrt 94035. In 1694, Germany was beset by heavy rains and a plague of grasshoppers. Food prices soared as speculation rose. The starving masses blamed the Jews, represented here as a grain dealer. This anti-Semitic medal would serve as the prototype for all the later "Kornjuden" medals. Contemporary loop.
