Lot: 2047

Rhode Island. May 1786. Two Panes of 6d, 9d, 1s, 2s6d. Notes. Fr.RI-290 through RI-293. All notes on the first pane bear the serial number 6861. The notes on the second pane are numbered 6890. The seals on the lower denominations with anchors and agricultural impliments; the seals on the higher denominations have anchors. Signed by Samuel Allen and N. Knight. Not fully issued, as three signers were required by the controversial Act that authorized these notes. Uncirculated, but there is heavy age toning on the back of the second sheet. If cut, the two panes would yield five Choice notes, a sixth note with minor foxing on the back, and two others with heavy foxing on the lower portions of their backs.

The controversy surrounded the legal tender status of this issue, because it allowed the courts try violators without the benefit of a jury. This "trial without jury" provision was contested before the Rhode Island Supreme Court and the law that authorized this issue of paper money was found to be unconstitutional. (See Trevett v. Weeden)
