Auction: 320 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale and the Forest Park Collection
Lot: 2046

Rhode Island. July 2, 1780. Full Double Sheet of Sixteen $1, $2, $3, $4, $5, $7, $8 and $20 Notes. Fr.RI-282 through RI-289. All notes on the first pane bear the serial number 443. The notes on the second pane are numbered 408. Red and black. The so-called "Guaranteed By the United States" issue. (The actual text employed states "THE UNITED STATES ensure the payment of the within Bill.") The backs feature design elements from the January 14, 1779 issue in black and red. The paper utilizes protective watermarks; "CONFEDE / RATION." The purpose of this issue was to redeem the Continental Currency issued during the Revolutionary War. Redemption was at the rate of 1 new dollar for 40 old dollars. Signed by Adam Comstock and Caleb Harris. The guaranty on the back is unsigned, as this sheet was never placed into circulation. Uncirculated, but with heavy foxing in the wide margins, and extending on to some of the notes; probably caused by contact with acidic storage materials.

If the sheet is cut into individual notes (as has been the fate of most sheets that come on to the market), it should yield eleven Choice to Gem notes, two Uncirculated notes with small areas of foxing, and two others with their left end panels foxed, and one example with a portion of its upper right corner foxed. The signatures are clear and bright, the paper is crisp and clean where it is not effected by the age toning. Should be inspected carefully. Sold as is, no returns.
