Madison, James. Fourth President of the United States (1809-1817). Statesman, political theorist, fifth U.S. Secretary of State (1801-1809); his work in drafting the U.S. Constitution and his authoring and championing the Bill of Rights earned him the title "Father of the Constitution". Journalist and author George F. Will once wrote that if we truly believed the pen was mightier than the sword, then our capital would have been called "Madison, D.C." Partly printed Document Signed "James Madison" as President. One page, folio, Washington, August 1, 1810. Land grant to "George Harter, of Beaver County, Pennsylvania" of a tract in the "Lands directed to be sold at Steubenville…in the Territory north west of the Ohio, and above the mouth of Kentucky river…". The land Harter purchased was in the Northwest Territory, which would later become the states of Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota. Minor offsetting and soiling, otherwise Very Good. Attractively matted beneath glass in a wooden frame, overall size 15" x 21 ½".
