Auction: 320 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale and the Forest Park Collection
Lot: 1850
Disney, Walt (1901-1966). ALS. To Madeline P. Smith, Secretary to Cole Porter. 7 ¼" x 10 ¼ ". On Walt Disney's personal stationary, "WALT DISNEY" printed at the top. Dated October 27, 1964. Signed "Walt Disney" in blue ballpoint pen. Three horizontal folds. There is a thin spot, upper left, possibly from a piece of tape that was used for mounting purposes and then removed, otherwise excellent.
Disney thanks Miss Smith for the "highly complimentary(SIC)" letter she wrote about "MARY POPPINS." His delight in receiving the letter is "dulled" by the fact that since the time Miss Smith mailed it from Disneyland, and the time Walt Disney received it, Cole Porter died (October 15, 1964). Disney deftly manages to thank Miss Smith for her letter, and also manages to express his condolences for her loss by saying that "If our picture can bring as much joy to the public as did Cole Porter's music, we will have been well rewarded." Timely content in light of the recent movie about the making of "MARY POPPINS."
