Eisenhower, Dwight D Thirty-fourth President of the United States (1890-1969, served 1953-61); earlier, Supreme Commander of Allied Forces in Europe during World War II. Typewritten Letter Signed "Dwight D Eisenhower" as Commander-in-Chief of Allied Forces, 1/2 page, 4to, on imprinted Allied Force Headquarters stationery, [London], September 22, 1943. He addressed the unnamed commanding officer of the 77 Field Artillery about Harmon W Hambrick of the medical detachment at 2nd Battalion headquarters: "This enlisted man has recently been brought ot my attention. As a personal favor will you inform me of his present rank, what his prospects are and any other pertinent information." File holes at top torn to edge, uneven toning at edges, VG. At the time of this note, Eisenhower was supervising the last stages of the Allied invasion of Italy, which had already secured Sicily and the southern third of the peninsula. We have been unable to determine why Gen Eisenhower was interested in Hambrick, who survived the war and passed away in 1986.
