Doyle, Arthur Conan Scottish writer and physician (1859-1930); best known for his wildly popular creation, the uncanny detective Sherlock Holmes. Great patriotic Autograph Letter Signed "Arthur Conan Doyle," 1 page, 8vo, Windlesham, Crowborough, Sussex, no date (but from content clearly during World War I). He writes to an unnamed correspondent, apparently in the United States, "Have no fear at all for us. We are fighting well within our strength and our victory is certain." In a postscript he adds, "Men of British origin can help us best by subscribing to the war loan which is spent in America." Folds, a few spots of foxing, but VG. Doyle´s son Kingsley was seriously wounded during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, and died in 1918 from pneumonia contracted during his convalescence. The loss of his son was a major factor in turning Doyle toward spiritualism in his later years.
