†1877 (22 July) opened-out, double rate, envelope from Kiukiang to North Marshfield "Via Sanfrancisco" bearing, on the reverse, a superb strike of "customs/kiukiang" double-circle c.d.s. in red, the cover bears 1873 10c. brown cancelled by cork obliterator with Shanghai type IIa Agency c.d.s. and San Francisco transit c.d.s. A rare Customs forerunner combination with U.S. adhesives Estimate £ 1,800-2,200 provenance: Dr. Riddell, February 1975 Note: These Kuikiang to U.S.A. covers are mostly from the Israel Oakman correspondence, only a handful have been recorded. Infact very few international covers were sent through the Customs service between 1875 and August 1878
