George I (1714-27), Five Guineas, 41.79g., 1717, laureate bust facing right, georgivs.dg.m.br.fr.et hib.rex.f.d., toothed border both sides, rev. inverted die axis, crowned cruciform broad shields, now incorporating the Arms of Hanover, garter star at centre, sceptres in angles, ten strings to Irish harp, date either side of halved English and Scottish shield, .brvn et.l.dvx s.r.i.a:th et.el., edge, inscribed in raised letters of upright axis, d of decvs inverted, +.decvs.et.tvtamen+.anno..regni.tertio. (MCE 239; S.3626), attractively toned, good extremely fine, extremely rare thus Estimate £8,000-10,000 provenance Purchased Baldwin 1949 for £130, seemingly an upgrade part-exchange, as the Baldwin ticket is from an earlier purchase of a 1716 Five Guineas of 1944 for £95. The purchase date and price have been changed on the ticket in pencil, but the date of the coin on the ticket was left unchanged, the edge error went unnoticed at this time too.
