James II (1685-88), Five Guineas, 41.71g., 1687, elephant and castle provenance mark below first laureate bust facing left, iacobvs.ii. dei.gratia, beaded border both sides, rev. inverted die axis, crowned cruciform shields, crowns with frosted inner rings, sceptres in angles, seven strings to Irish harp, date either side of crown above English shield, .mag. br.fra. et.hib. rex., edge, inscribed in raised letters of upright axis .+.decvs.et.tvtamen.anno.regni. tertio.+. (MCE 118; S.3398), struck on a broad flan showing most unusually full border beads both sides, light red tone with full mint bloom, a few black specks both sides from surface metal stresses in the striking, otherwise a superb specimen, prooflike, as struck and the finest James II Five Guineas we have seen, of the highest rarity thus Estimate £12,000-15,000 provenance W Brice, collection purchased en bloc by H Montagu H Montagu, Sotheby, 13 November 1896, lot 842 B M S Roth, Sotheby, 19 July 1917, lot 349 Lieut Col T G Taylor, collection purchased by Spink 1936 Dr E C Carter, collection purchased en bloc by Baldwin, 1950 Purchased Baldwin 1951 for £125
