Charles I, Pattern Shilling, 6.41g., Tower mint, pattern for group D, m.m. rose (struck during the currency of group C), large bust of king wearing armour and soft falling lace collar, carolvs d g mag brit fra et hib rex, rev. oval garnished shield with cr at sides, christo avspice regno, no inner circles (Sharp p.110; N.2697), pattern on an exceptionally full flan, with a smoky grey tone over deep underlying lustre, in mint state, excessively rare, one of two known Estimate £3,000-4,000 provenance:

The only other recorded specimen was also owned by Montagu. It is more sharply struck than this example but weak in parts and was sold in the Montagu duplicate sale, 7 May 1888, lot 363. It was, most recently, listed in Spink Numismatic Circular, November 1987, no. 6462
