James II (1685-88), Crown, 29.53g., 1686, first laureate and draped bust facing left, iacobvs.ii. dei.gratia, toothed border both sides, rev. inverted die axis, crowned cruciform shields, five strings to Irish harp, Garter Star at centre, date either side of crown above English shield, .mag. br.fra. et.hib rex., edge, inscribed in raised letters of inverted axis, .+.decvs.et.tvtamen. .anno.regni.secvndo.+ (ESC 76; S.3406), well struck for this usually crude issue, slight weakness at top and bottom of bust and in corresponding areas of reverse, edge metal flaw by top area of weakness, some light flecking on reverse, attractively toned, extremely fine, very rare in this condition Estimate £2,000-2,500 provenance Purchased Baldwin 1943 for £10.10/-
