D.F.M. London Gazette 14.6.1940, Leslie Stewart Dillnutt, No.48 Sqd.

The Recommendation states: 'On 29th May, 1940, three miles North West of Zeebrugge, L.A.C. Dillnutt was Air Gunner in an Anson which, in company with two others, was attacked by nine Me 109s. Although the pilot kept his aircraft skidding violently from side to side the enemy bullets were riddling it. L.A.C. Dillnutt kept his head and used his gun with such skill that he shot down one Me.109 and thinks he damaged one or two others. The combined fire of the three Ansons was sufficient to drive off the remaining Me 109s. L.A.C. Dillnutt is strongly recommended for the immediate award of the Distinguished Flying Medal for this exhibition of skill and coolness in action.'

A Londoner, Leslie Dilnutt (this is the correct spelling) was a caretaker before joining the R.A.F. in 1935. He flew with 48 Squadron and later with 210 Squadron. He died 21.4.1941, and is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.
