Admiral Sir Edwyn Sinclair Alexander-Sinclair G.C.B., M.V.O. (1865-1945), entered the Royal Navy 1879; Captain in Command Osbourne Naval College, 1905-08, M.V.O. 1.10.1908 on his retirement from this appointment; in command of H.M.S. Galatea when that ship assisted in the destruction of Zeppelin L7 off the Schlesvig Coast, 4.5.1916. (C.B. London Gazette 3.6.1916.); he was appointed to the command of the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, February 1916, with his broad pennant in H.M.S. Galatea; took part in the battle of Jutland, 31st May-1st June, 1916, where his Squadron was the first to make contact with and report the pressence of the enemy vessels; Commanded the 3rd Light Cruiser Squadron, 1917-1920; Rear Admiral 1917 (K.C.B., 1919; Mentioned in Despatches twice, French Croix de Guerre, and Russian Order of St. Vladimir with swords, 3rd Class); Commanded the 1st Battle Squadron Atlantic Fleet, 1922-24; Commander-in-Chief China Station, 1925-26 and the Nore, 1927-30; Admiral, 1926; Principle Naval A.D.C. to the King, 1930; retired list, 1930; G.C.B., 1930
