The Unique Portuguese Commander's War Cross for Eleven Actions
Bestowed upon Major General Sir Denis Pack for the following actions, Vimiera, Corunna, Buzaco, Cuidad Rodrigo, Salamanca, Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nive, Nivelle, Orthes, Toulouse, 82mm. x 62.5mm., gold and enamel, portrait of King John VI to left in both centres, extremely fine, with straight gold suspension bar, original riband and gold riband buckle
The Commander's Cross was instituted by King John VI of Portugal at Rio de Janeiro on 28.6.1816, becoming effective on 28.3.1820 by an Order of the Day signed by Marshal Beresford.It was awarded to Officers of the Portugese Ary, both British and Portuguese, who commanded and fought with their units in certain specified actions. Those commanding a Division, Brigade, Regiment or Battalion were eligible. Only one decoration for more than eleven actions is known, that awarded to Viscount Beresford himself, for twelve actions.
