Holladay, Ben American transportation mogul (1819-87); purchased the Pony Express; sold his vast stage coach lines to Wells Fargo; built the Oregon and California Railroad before the Panic of 1873 destroyed his business empire. Partly printed DS "Ben Holladay / President" of the Oregon and California RR Co., 1p, narrow oblong 4to, Portland, OR, 12/10/1870. A check drawn on the company and payable to George W. Weidler in the amount of $601.90. With locomotive vignette at left. Check number 462. Endorsed and transferred on verso. Not cancelled. In very good condition. Years later, after Holladay had gone bankrupt, George Weidler was one of the men chosen to take over management of his companies in the northwest. Estimate US$ 150-200
