Halleck, Fitz Greene American poet (1790-1867); best known for his long satiric poem Fanny; later, private secretary to John Jacob Astor, becoming largely responsible for the quality of the millionaire´s art collection and the creation of the Astor Library. Unusual A three times "Fitz G. Halleck" twice in the body and once at close, 2-2/3 pages, 4to, NYC, 2/25/1821. A document regarding the transfer of "the Ship Lady Gallatin of the burthen of three hundred and fifty eight 90/95 Tons or thereabouts...by Jacob Barker of the City...to Allen Shepherd of the said City, Merchant...but which transfer was in fact intended as a security to the said Allen Shepherd for certain debts and demands then due him...until he afterwards assigned the same to us and from thence in the possession and enjoyment of us, viz. Fitz G. Halleck and Samuel T. Ross..." Also signed by Ross at close as well as by two witnesses. With wax and paper seals. Third page inlaid to a slightly larger sheet. Two small and clean holes, otherwise in very good condition. Jacob Barker, for whom Halleck worked at the time, was one of the nation´s most prominent bankers, and had helped the US secure a $5 million loan during the War of 1812. Estimate US$ 150-200
