Hale, Edward Everett American author, philanthropist, and clergyman (1822-1909); best known today for having written stories such as "The Man Without a Country," he was also a forceful advocate of volunteerism. Good pair of LS, each with its body in a different hand, 1-1/3pp and 1p, both 8vo, on stationery imprinted with his name and address, Roxbury, MA, 11/15/1888 and 1/7/1890. The first transmits a copy [not present] "of this book of which the first number has appeared in [the periodical Hale edited] ´Lend a Hand´..." and says a correspondent wrote of one of the stories in the book "as ranking with...´Uncle Tom´s Cabin´..." Small hole touching one word, age toned, otherwise VG. The later letter, to Mrs. E.A. Chadwick of Exeter, NY, explains that "I have your subscription for Mrs. Hardy. It is a very difficult charity to help, and she is so far away, and does not like to make reports any more than I do. I am all the more grateful to you for remembering her." Paper clip crease, otherwise VG. With original envelope.
