Byrd, Richard E. - American aviator and polar explorer (1888-1957); commanded the first flight over the South Pole. Printed SP "with kindest regards / RE Byrd" over blank margin and dark areas of image. Inscribed Philip E. Halder. An 8vo bust-length pose, possibly from a book. With TLS "Dick Byrd," 1/2p, 4to, on Navy Dept. Bureau of Aeronautics stationery, Washington, 12/23/1942. He thanks Harry Chandler of the LA Times for his editorial "putting Senators Maas and Willis where they belong..." He has given his only copy to Adm. King and request another.
