Burnett, Frances Hodgson English-born American novelist and playwright (1849-1924); among her most beloved works are The Secret Garden and A Little Princess. Choice ALS "Frances Hodgson Burnett," 2pp, 8vo, on black-bordered mourning stationery imprinted "Massachusetts Avenue / 1770," [Washington, DC], no date [but probably ca. 1890-1]. To a Miss Seawell she pens, "When I sent to buy the tickets for Box 3 for tonight they were gone. I hoped to be able to go though I am not up to much to day. It was very kind of Mrs. Washington to send us cards for after the play. I am going to rest all afternoon in the hope of being equal to the evening..." Minor fold wear, with a small smudge at right edge of signature, otherwise in very good condition. Mrs. Burnett´s son Lionel died of tuberculosis in 1890, so the mourning stationery suggests this letter was from the year following that tragedy. Estimate US$ 150-200
