Derby, Edward Stanley, Earl of English statesman (1826-93); son of PM Edward Smith-Stanley, under whom he served as Foreign Secretary; known as a compassionate and conscientious presence in a succession of cabinet posts. Striking youthful three-quarter-length albumen-format image of him seated, his hand resting on a book, believed to be by Maull and Polyblank, 1858. A handsome, 7.75" x 5.75" image with an arched top, mounted on a gilt-edged 12" x 8.5" page. Matted, overall size 18" x 14". Estimate US$ 150-200
