World War II: James Forrestal US naval officer, aviator, and public official (1892-1949); US Secretary of Defense and, during World War II, Secretary of the Navy. Exceptional TLS "Jim" as Under Secretary of the Navy and Acting Secretary, 1/4 page, 8vo, on his official imprinted stationery, Washington, May 14, 1944. Just five days before replacing his late superior, Frank Knox, who had died on April 28, Forrestal sends his thanks to journalist Barnet Nover across town, "for your note. It is the people of the Navy and not myself who deserve the credit. I happen merely to be the symbol of what many better men are accomplishing...I will do my best." Fine. Estimate US$ 75-100
